Affordable Communities

Everyday life in our communities is expensive. Property taxes are too high.

Assemblymember Abinanti worked to make our communities more affordable. He worked to substitute State monies and alternative revenues and reduce taxes on the neediest.

• Passed landmark legislation to bring special new revenues for Greenburgh & Mt. Pleasant (through hotel room occupancy fees paid mainly by out-of-town visitors)

•Voted to share County sales tax revenues with municipalities and school districts to reduce reliance on property taxes

• Passed special legislation to raise income ceilings to give more seniors and people with disabilities property tax exemptions – and for veterans

•Voted for a “circuit breaker” property tax rebate for low and middle income families.

• Voted to cut middle-class income taxes

• Voted for record State education aid & rebate checks to subsidize local property taxes

• Passed a law creating a commission to propose property tax changes to protect homeowners and eliminate the tax breaks for big businesses masquerading as “non-profits,” which shifts property tax burdens to homeowners

In the midst of plenty, there is still plenty of hunger. Assemblymember Abinanti’s law requires supermarkets to give their excess food to food banks.
