Meet Tom

Tom Abinanti is a practicing attorney, a strong advocate for people with disabilities and  a dedicated, forceful, common sense community leader.

Tom is an independent, issue-oriented community leader. He stands up for what’s right no matter who is on the other side – a political boss, a government official or the powerbrokers in New York.  He brings extensive experience in the legislative process, a real understanding of our community and a deep concern for our quality of life.

Tom Abinanti served in the New York State Assembly for 12 years (2011-22) representing the 92nd Assembly District.  He served as chair of the Assembly Committees on Libraries and Educational Technology; Oversight, Analysis and Investigations; Banks; and most recently . Committee on People with Disabilities.

Prior to his election to the Assembly, Tom represented Greenburgh in the Westchester County Legislature where he led the way to preserving hundreds of acres for parks/open space and passed landmark clean air and clean water legislation. He passed laws to reform Westchester’s gun regulations and to clean up the trash industry. He was instrumental in establishing the Westchester Medical Center as an independent public benefit corporation. He was Majority Leader three times.

Tom has had a dramatic, positive impact on Westchester‘s quality of life. He’s been a strong voice in Albany for our suburban communities – a leader in bettering education, preserving our environment, promoting gun safety, protecting women’s rights and advocating for people with special needs. As a father of two and grandfather of three, he knows the need for good, quality schools. He has consistently battled to control Westchester’s high property taxes and knows that state action is needed to help reduce them.

Previously, Tom was a Greenburgh Town Councilman, Legislative Counsel to a Congress member, Prosecuting Attorney for the Villages of Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry, served as attorney for the Greenburgh Housing Authority and pro bono attorney for the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion.

Tom also served as Chair of the Mount Pleasant Democratic Committee.

Tom lives with his wife Janet Longo-Abinanti and their son Justin in Pleasantville. Janet was a science research teacher at Sleepy Hollow High School and now works in the special needs field. Justin was a student at the Pleasantville High School in a Special Education Program for students with Autism. Tom’s daughter Nicole is a medical doctor. She lives with her husband and their three children.

Tom graduated  NYU Law School (J.D.), Fordham College (B.A.) and Xaverian High School (Brooklyn). He has taught Continuing Legal Education Courses for Pace Law School (White Plains) and courses in State and Local Government as an adjunct professor at Mercy College (Dobbs Ferry).

Born in Brooklyn, Tom later moved to Greenburgh where he was an active member of the Greenburgh Community. He served as President of the Orchard Hill Civic Association before being elected to the Town Council.
